Alexander Technique in Glasgow with flowcoach

This blog is about some free and readily-available resources that you can use to help coach your own mind and body to a more sustainable level of awareness and tone.

As with all such advice, you might want to consult your doctor before implementation. Making suggestions without such an individual consultation to determine your particular requirements does entail some risks, but in my opinion you should do the following:

  • Lie down.

Finished already? I thought you could have stayed there for a few more minutes. Or maybe you would have preferred a bit more guidance. In which case, the next time you choose to lie down in this manner (and I hope you will), you might choose to do any or all of the following...

  • Choose a firm but forgiving surface. Assuming that you are indoors, a carpeted floor is ideal.

  • Support your head so that it is in much the same relationship to the rest of your body as when you sit or stand.

  • Bend your legs (like in the photo) as this allows your lower back to relax and come into more contact with the ground.

  • Probably bend your legs a bit more, ie bring your heels even closer to your bum. The closer they are to your bum, the less tension you need to keep them in that position.

  • Let your eyes be open, so you maintain awareness of where you are. However...

  • If you find yourself falling asleep, give yourself permission to do so. You clearly need it.

  • Breathe. It's good for you.

  • You might choose to have your hands touching the ground or touching your belly. But you are better off not having them touch each other, as you are likely then to only notice the sensations of the hands themselves.

Why is this beneficial? What should you occupy yourself with while lying down? These are questions that I will soon address in other blogs.

But the crux of the matter will always remain the same. Lying down feels good for body and mind. It's free. It's easy. So why do we find it so difficult to do it?
